“Major Snow”(DaXue), the 21st solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar, marks the official onset of mid-winter, usually falling around December 6th or 8th when the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 255 degrees.
Similar to Minor Snow, Major Snow reflects changes in temperature and precipitation trends, serving as a significant indicator in agricultural traditions. This period is characterised by a noticeable drop in temperature, often accompanied by rain or snow.
Folk customs during Major Snow include salt-cured meats, engaging in snowball fights, admiring snow scenes, and dietary supplements. In Nanjing, there’s a saying: “Pickling vegetables in Minor Snow, curing meat in Major Snow.” Many households hang cured meats, sausages, and salted fish at their doors and windows during this period, and with rivers frozen, people can start enjoying ice skating.
Major Snow is an ideal time for nourishment, boosting the immune system, and promoting metabolism. Winter supplements help regulate internal substance metabolism, ensuring nutrients are stored efficiently.
